Adding to the Star Wars Day celebrations on this last May the 4th before EPISODE VII’s theatrical release, Vanity Fair has released some new THE FORCE AWAKENS character portraits from its STAR WARS special cover issue, simultaneously confirming some character names and actor casting details.

The higher profile news reveals include:

Lupita Nyong’o playing space pirate Maz Kanata, a character realized by the actress’ motion-capture performance translated into CG form. No doubt there will be plenty of characters living and profiting in the moral middle-ground of the galaxy after the Resistance’s victory over the Empire, especially if war has continued to maintain or assume control of systems in the chaotic aftermath. Kanata seems to be a smuggler/pirate-type leader in this shadowy underworld.

Confirmation that Gwendoline Christie plays Captain Phasma, the chrome-plated trooper character previously glimpsed and member of the First Order, a post-Empire revival of dark forces threatening peace in the galaxy. It seems most likely Phasma will be an EPISODE VII villain, but all bets are off for now as we learn more than the scant details available about the new conflict between the Resistance (the post-Empire phase of the Rebellion) and the First Order, an as-yet unknown quantity which appears to have picked up the Empire’s desire to seek power through aggressive militarism.

As expected, Adam Driver plays Kylo Ren, a Force-wielding villain using that wicked tri-blade lightsaber seen in the first and second TFA teaser trailers. Vanity Fair’s photo reveal shows Ren commanding some First Order snowtroopers on an icy world (possibly Sullust) as battle against the Resistance ensues. Kylo Ren is also glimpsed wearing a metallic facemask as he unleashes his lightsaber fury on opponents and making a Force gesture with his hand.

Finally, Vanity Fair’s article (as revealed so far) once again fails to list a last name for Daisy Ridley‘s character, Rey, only stoking the rumors that will be the daughter of Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) and Han Solo (Harrison Ford). Rey’s destiny seems intertwined with that of Finn (John Boyega), seen wearing stormtrooper armor in both THE FORCE AWAKENS trailers released, though the newest teaser shows him out of uniform on the war-torn planet Jakku as well.

Check out the photo gallery in Vanity Fair expose of these characters and more, including a heroic portrait of Oscar Isaac as X-Wing pilot Poe Dameron, a group photo of the ruffians and rascal who inhabit Maz Kanata’s pirate castle, a location photo of director J.J. Abrams on-set, and a group portrait of STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS’ creative leaders Abrams, producer Kathleen Kennedy, co-writer Lawrence Kasdan and score composer John Williams.
