Four Character Name Reveals in STAR WARS VII Trading Cards

Though EW.com’s exclusive today, four major characters and one droid name have been revealed for STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS, though mockups of of Topps trading cards appearing in EW’s article. We’ll get to the details soon, but right now you just want to learn the character names for John Boyega, Daisy Ridley and Oscar Issac, so here they are!

Oscar Isaac’s X-Wing pilot character is Poe Dameron:

Though these trading card reveals, we now also know the name of that mysterious figure tromping through that snowy forest, igniting his flaming lightsaber (yes, Lucasfilm officially calls it a lightsaber on the card) — he is Kylo Ren! Now if we could only get confirmation which actor plays Kylo.

  • ‘Kylo Ren ignites his Lightsaber!’ as seen in this Topps trading card design revealing this mystery character’s name from STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS.

Rounding out this (first?) set of eight character reveal card designs, it’s comforting to know that the Stormtroopers are still called Stormtroopers, X-Wings are the same, and the Millennium Falcon is as iconic as ever — whomever is piloting it in this scene from THE FORCE AWAKENS teaser trailer:

  • ‘Stormtrooper prepare for battle’ as seen in this Topps trading card design revealing some character names from STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS.
  • ‘X-Wings in formation!’ as seen in this Topps trading card design revealing a few character names from STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS.
  • ‘The Millennium Falcon!’ as seen in this Topps trading card design revealing a few character names from STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS.

As for these new names: they all strike me as fairly typical STAR WARS monikers, which is to say they sound a bit weird at first and will remain so until we get to see more of Finn, Rey, Poe and Kylo in action to better put names to faces. Poe Dameron seems like the odd name out upon learning it, as it doesn’t fall so smoothly off the tongue, though Poe is a rather cool first name for an X-Wing pilot and male lead character. Kylo Ren makes a good villain’s name, if indeed the character is revealed to be a STAR WARS VII villain, as many predict given his bad ass, flaming lightsaber weapon. Will Kylo be revealed as Adam Driver‘s supposed Sith-leaning character?

More importantly, we can only assume the both Finn and Rey’s last names have NOT been revealed in these trading card images because that information might give away too much of the characters/plot’s secrets. Is Rey a Solo, daughter of Leia and Han, making her by default half-Skywalker in lineage? Is Finn any relation to any classic characters or simply one of the newer Stormtrooper soldiers who gets woven into the plot events of THE FORCE AWAKENS?

A fun way to reveal STAR WARS VII characters today, but this first dealing of the trading card deck still leaves us without character names for Driver, Lupita Nyon’o, Domhnall Gleason, Max von Sydow and Gwendolyn Christie, not to mention any hints about who (or what) Andy Serkis will be portraying — especially after hearing his deepened, groaning voice in the recent teaser trailer.

We know more than we did yesterday, which is progress. Now who’s up for collecting and trading some Topps cards? Stay tuned as we watch for more character reveals, possibly on their way soon.
